Bogs are incredible ecosystems, with species adapted to diverse conditions. Many of the bog specialist plant species found in the Sax-Zim Bog are early flowering plant species, spruce or tamarack specialist bird species, or even wetland specialist insects! This trip will hope to observe a few of these specialist species, as well as get in the bog for a better understanding of the life histories of the amazing plants and animals that call the Sax-Zim Bog home. We hope to track down sundews and pitcher plants, Palm Warbler and Lincoln’s Sparrow, see flowering leatherleaf, Labrador tea, bog laurel, and other goodies, like Wood Frogs. This training will introduce bog ecology from the perspective of how species (flora and fauna alike) specialize in the harsh conditions of a bog ecosystem.

Location address: Sax-Zim Bog, 8793 Owl Avenue, Meadowlands, MN 55765

Wetlands, lakes, rivers, and streams dot Minnesota’s landscape. These aquatic ecosystems are incredibly important for humans and animals alike! But, have you ever had a chance to wade into the muck and see what lives in the ponds and streams you see every day? This training will focus on learning how to identify wetlands, streams, and lakes as well as serve as an exploration of the aquatic biodiversity therein!
