What is Instructional Design?

Do you ever wonder what goes into creating authentic and interactive training, meaningful multimedia for instruction, and memorable online learning experiences?

Instructional design is a creative process involving collaboration, analysis of learning contexts, design, development, implementation, and evaluation intended for improving learning experiences in a variety of settings. Instructional designers work in nearly every sector. As advances in industries and technologies continue to evolve, learning and training remain essential. As such, instructional design continues to be important in all disciplines, and a key transferable skill to develop.

Who can register for this course?

All University of Minnesota (on all campuses) graduate students, professional students, and postdocs can register for this workshop series. This course is designed for students from all disciplines.

What will I learn in this course?

This 3-week online workshop introduces learners to instructional design as a transferable skill. Learners gain practice designing, developing, and evaluating their own professional development modules.

  • The workshop begins with an introduction to the historical and theoretical foundations of the field.

  • Next, learners explore instructional design models to understand the processes involved in instructional design.

  • Moving from theory into practice, learners begin conducting front-end analysis and considering strategies they can apply in their own instructional design project.

Upon completion of this 3-week online workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Apply theories, models, and strategies for designing and developing instruction.

  • Use a variety of multimedia applications for implementing learning solutions.

  • Design and develop a professional development module.

  • Prepare evaluation surveys of their instructional design project for iterative improvement.

To successfully complete the workshop series, learners are expected to participate in all workshop modules in order to produce a final project that will be evaluated by the facilitator. As validation, the Graduate School will issue learners a Gold Badge to be used as evidence of skills development on social media accounts and professional portfolios like LinkedIn.

When is this course?

This 3-week online workshop runs August 1 - 19. Learners will be invited to engage in dialogue and activities through Canvas and Slack during six 3-day modules. To successfully complete the series of 6 modules of the workshop, learners can expect to interact with:

  • Approximately 60 minutes of instructional videos and text authored by the instructor

  • Approximately 180 minutes on readings, activities, and project assignments

  • 60 minutes interacting with peers

  • For a total of 5 hours per 3-day module

Each module is facilitated asynchronously giving learners the freedom to engage in the work at any time during the 3 days of each module. Each module session builds upon the previous one, as learners are guided to practice their instructional design skills while developing their culminating final project.
