As a part of an organization’s overall risk management efforts, root cause analysis (RCA) is a valuable approach for assessing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks. Whether in a healthcare setting, on a construction site, in a manufacturing facility, at a service provider or elsewhere, RCA can be used to reveal underlying factors contributing to workplace incidents, identify preventive actions, support data-driven decision making, and facilitate continuous improvement in an organization’s OHS programs. Learners in this online course =will be introduced to basic concepts in RCA, its uses in the OHS setting, and a set of basic, yet effective, tools for conducting RCA.

Objectives

Following this education session, learners will be able to:

  • Summarize the root cause analysis concepts discussed pertinent to the occupational health and safety setting.
  • Recognize common types of situations root cause analysis tools might be used in occupational health and safety settings.
  • Identify the context in which occupational health and safety professionals might use root cause analysis.
  • Recognize basic root cause analysis tools.
