Description

This course is designed to train members of the lay public to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Successful completion of this course will make the student eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam.

BLS (Basic Life Support):

AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (not HeartSaver, not "CPR AED" unless it's followed by "for the professional rescuer") is required for this course. If you do not have BLS certification, you can order HeartCode BLS through the American Heart Association here: https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-bls. Once you have completed the didactic portion online, you can print out your certificate and we can complete the skill testing portion during the semester--normally outside of the normal class schedule. You'll then receive your BLS certification. As of November 2021, the course is $31, payable to the AHA through their site.

In order to successfully complete the EMT course, all candidates must also complete the following online courses through the FEMA Emergency Management Institute. These courses are free and can be completed online. Ideally, candidates will complete this training prior to the first day of class, but it must be completed before the final exam. Completion certificates should be printed and brought to class on day 1.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the student will be eligible to sit for the cognitive exam for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and become certified to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Minnesota, and other states depending on applicable state law.

This course meets or exceeds the National EMS Education Standards.

Key Benefits

EMTs may serve on ambulance services, rescue squads, fire departments and hospital emergency departments. EMTs may also serve in special event locations, such as amusement parks, sporting events and concerts.

This is the Summer EMT course. It is being conducted as a hybrid program, combining live lecture via Zoom and in-person skills labs. The zoom link will be sent out as part of the new student information prior to class.

NOTE: Deadline for registration is May 20th, 2024

This course will be conducted with in-person skill labs on Wednesdays. Depending on class size, your skill labs may vary from 2-4 hours.

Skill labs will be held at the University of Minnesota Department of Emergency Management office, located at University Office Plaza, 2221 University Ave. SE, Suite 140, Minneapolis, MN 55414. It is located immediately to the east of Huntington Bank Stadium. Codes for eText and MyLab Brady (used for this course) will be issued prior to the start of class.

Prerequisite- BLS: Certification as a BLS Provider (by AHA or ARC--including Lifeguard) is required for this course. "HeartSaver" or "CPR/AED/First Aid" cards from the AHA or ARC are for lay rescuers and not accepted for EMT certification. If you require BLS certification, you may complete the didactic portion on your own and be tested out during class. To complete AHA BLS Provider & receive complimentary BLS skill testing, you may purchase HeartCode BLS through the American Heart Association (AHA) here: https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-bls . Complete the online portion, submit the completion certificate and we will provide the skill testing and completion card.

Prerequisites: Certification as an EMT requires that you complete several FEMA self-study courses prior to completing the class. These are free and self paced. You can complete them before class begins. The links are in several places, but are included here again:

You will be expected to provide copies of these certifications, ideally before the first day of class.

Clinical Experience:

EMT students may conduct clinical rotations with the Minneapolis Fire Department and a local emergency department. UMEMS will facilitate scheduling those sessions, but clinical sessions will occur outside of normal classroom hours. You will have a total of 8 hours of clinical time.

Clinical Prerequisites:

To complete this course and the associated clinical experience, students will:

  • Be subject to a background check through the University of Minnesota or their approved vendor
  • Be required to be vaccinated against both COVID and Influenza
  • Have a negative TB test within the last year
