Description

Qualitative methods are critical for understanding the experiences and perspectives of our partners and communities, but often require specialized skills and extensive time commitments to successfully implement. Rapid qualitative methods seek to address these gaps. We will describe a simple rapid qualitative method, template analysis, which can be used to efficiently translate participant experiences and perspectives into actionable results.

Objectives

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to:

  •  add source materials (text, images, audio/video, survey/spreadsheets)
  • work with concepts (or codes/tags) and their definitions and apply them to their source materials
  • make annotations and analytical memos
  • query their work for faster insights and inference

  • 1B11. Identifies assets and resources that can be used for improving the health of a community (e.g., Boys & Girls Clubs, public libraries, hospitals, faith-based organizations, academic institutions, federal grants, fellowship programs)
  • 2A6. Gathers information that can inform options for policies, programs, and services (e.g., secondhand smoking policies, data use policies, HR policies, immunization programs, food safety programs)
  • 3A/B/C2. Communicates in writing and orally with linguistic and cultural proficiency
  • 3A7. Facilitates communication among individuals, groups, and organizations
  • 4A4. Recognizes the contribution of diverse perspectives in developing, implementing, and evaluating policies, programs, and services that affect the health of a community
  • 5A6. Engages community members (e.g., focus groups, talking circles, formal meetings, key informant interviews) to improve health in a community
