Description

This course consists of 4 content modules on hormonal contraception, smoking cessation and opioid antagonists. Each module may be taken individually, or together as a full course. This course will meet the expected training requirements from the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for pharmacists to be able to prescribe hormonal contraception, nicotine replacement therapy, and opioid antagonists. Each module is designed to build on the pharmacist's existing clinical knowledge and prepare the pharmacist for the initial assessment, selection of appropriate therapies, and adjusting therapies based on patient outcomes. Course modules will have a significant focus on application of clinical knowledge to patient cases.

 

Credit Designation Statement


In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education and the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. All conflict of interest has been mitigated. 
Hormonal Contraception: This activity is designated for 3.0 CPE contact hours (CEUs) through ACPE.
Smoking Cessation: Nicotine Replacement: This activity is designated for 1.0 CPE contact hours (CEUs) through ACPE. 
Opioid Antagonists: This activity is designated for 1.0 CPE contact hours (CEUs) through ACPE. 
PrEP and PEP: This activity is approved for 2.5 contact hours.

 


Instructors

 

Camille Beaudey

Dr. Beauduy, PharmD, BCIDP, is a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist. She practiced in the acute care setting, where she consulted with Infectious Disesases physicians to optimize the medication therapy for hospitalized patients with acute and chronic illness, including HIV and associated opportunistic infections.

 

Daniel Holt

Daniel Holt, PharmD, AAHIVP, CSP, is a practicing clinical pharmacist at North Memorial Health Infectious Disease Clinic, working withinthe specialty pharmacy program. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2008 and hasmany years of retail, specialty, and clinical pharmacy and leadership experience. He is Adjunct Clinical Faculty atthe University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, precepting students for over 10 years. He is a Certified HIVPharmacist and Certified Specialty Pharmacist.

 

Jean Moon

Dr. Moon, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCACP, is a professor for the University of Minnesota (U of MN) College of Pharmacy and Associate Dean of Student Affairs, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. She has been teaching pulmonary medicine for about 10 years to national and local pharmacy professional audiences, including smoking cessation and motivational interviewing.

 

Melanie Nicol

Dr. Nicol, PharmD, PhD, l has worked in the field of HIV and antiretrovirals since 2009. She has performed NIH-funded research on the pharmacology of HIV prevention medications and has published over 25 manuscripts and textbooks on the use of antiretrovirals to treat or prevent HIV infection.

 

Laura Palombi 

Laura Palombi, PharmD, MPH, MAT is Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Minnesota – College of Pharmacy in Duluth and has an appointment as an affiliate assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Dr. Palombi graduated with her PharmD from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 2012 and completed a PGY1 residency with the University of Minnesota’s ambulatory care pharmacy program in 2013. 

Laura Palombi has been working with rural and Tribal communities to address opioid use and overdose for a decade.

 

Chrystian Pereira

Chrystian Pereira, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCACP, is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in the department of Pharmaceutical Care and Health Systems. He has been teaching pharmacotherapy at the College of Pharmacy since 2006 and been lecturing on smoking cessation at UMMC Family Medicine Residency since 2004. 

 

Sarah Westberg

Dr. Westberg is currently Associate Dean for Professional Affairs and a Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota.  She graduated with her Pharm.D. from Drake University, completed a Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Residency at the University of Minnesota, and then joined the University of Minnesota faculty.  During her career she has provided comprehensive medication management services in family medicine, internal medicine, and women’s health clinics.  She is dedicated to teaching future pharmacists to provide patient-centered care, and works passionately to increase the opportunities and sustainability of pharmacists services to improve the health and lives of our patients and communities.

Objectives:

  • Identify mechanisms of action of hormonal contraceptive agents.
  • Describe initiation, contraindications, precautions, and adverse effects of all hormonal contraceptives, including drug-drug interactions.
  • Describe the MN Board of Pharmacy prescribing protocol for self-administered hormonal contraceptives.
  • Assess a patient and determine most appropriate hormonal contraception, in alignment with evidence, clinical guidelines (CDC MEC), and individual patient characteristics and preferences.
  • Develop an appropriate care plan, including education and follow-up for a patient using hormonal contraception.
  • In a patient experiencing side effects from CHCs, identify hormone imbalance causing the side effect & recommend appropriate changes.

 

Opioid Antagonists objectives

  • Identify signs and symptoms of opioid overdose
  • Identify steps in responding to an opioid overdose including administration of naloxone

    • Retain clinical management concepts for PEP and PrEP including pharmacotherapy, medication administration, lab stewardship, and coordination of care 
  • Module 2:
    • Review the changes in law and legal requirements for pharmacist prescribing of HIV prevention medications in Minnesota 
    • Consistently use patient-centered communication style in both written and verbal formats 
    • Understand operational and documentation requirements for pharmacist prescribing of HIV prevention medications 
    • Explore barriers to successful implementation of new pharmacy-based HIV prevention programs
