Description

Join the University of Minnesota Extension for an informative, hands-on workshop to learn about the fundamentals of pruning dormant apple trees. During this time we’ll also learn about various considerations related to pruning technique and decision making, along with best practices for tool care. Participants are welcome to bring their own tools, such as pruning shears, loppers, and hand saws to the workshop. We recommend dressing for the weather and to be prepared for a session of active learning.

This practical session will be led by Extension educators Madeline Wimmer and Ryan Lermon, who will cover the fundamentals of pruning apple trees including key principles, proper techniques, and decision making considerations.

Whether you are new to pruning or looking for a refresher, this workshop is designed for orchard workers, Master Gardeners, hobby growers, and backyard gardeners. Participants can bring their own pruning tools and should dress for active outdoor learning. All attendees will receive the UMN Extension guide to pruning apple trees.

Join Cook County University of Minnesota Extension for a pruning workshop! For new and established commercial, hobby, and backyard growers.

By the end of this workshop you’ll have a better understanding of:

  • Apple tree anatomy and where and how fruit is set
  • Step-by-step practices approach to prune for health and productivity
  • Best practices for tool care and use

We'll begin at the Cook County Community Center, then head outside to practice pruning at the Cook County Community Orchard a few blocks away. Dress for the weather,
