Description

Learn the foundational concepts and applied skills needed to work effectively with relational for business operations and data analytics.

Outline

The Database Fundamentals for Data Analytics course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational concepts and practical skills required to analyze relational data effectively to support business operations Throughout the course, learners will explore how data is generated, structured and stored, gaining the ability to navigate complex datasets by interpreting schemas, tables, keys and relationships. By pairing theoretical database concepts with hands-on applications each week, learners will evaluate data readiness, recognizing potential issues related to normalization, data quality, granularity and bias before beginning their analysis to improve organizational readiness.

Building on this structural knowledge, the course emphasizes applied skills in SQL for extracting, filtering and summarizing data. Learners will apply the techniques needed to confidently join tables and apply filters to write queries that directly address specific analytical questions for implementation planning. Ultimately, learners will develop the capability to produce reliable SQL query results that seamlessly serve as inputs for reporting, visualization and analytical tools, empowering them to answer meaningful questions from real-world datasets and drive data-informed decision making.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • interpret relational database structures by identifying tables, keys, relationships and schemas in order to navigate complex datasets.
  • retrieve data using SQL by appropriately joining tables and applying filters that align with the analytical question.
  • evaluate data readiness for analysis by recognizing issues related to normalization, data quality, granularity and potential sources of bias or incompleteness.
  • produce SQL query results that serve as inputs to reporting, visualization and analytical tools.

Course Format

This six-week course blends elements of asynchronous and synchronous components to provide learners with flexibility in project work, while also having face-to-face time with instructors and fellow learners via Zoom.

Each week, learners will:

  • attend one 90-minute Zoom, during which students will participate in discussions and workshop their project with the instructor and peers
  • complete three to four hours of assignments or project work

Learners will be graded based on completion of assessed assignments/projects.
