STRL X028 - 2027 Structural Series Webinar #3 (Feb. 16)
Description
Design for Stability in Steel Buildings and BridgesOutline
Design for Stability in Steel Buildings and Bridges
This lecture examines the stability of compression and flexural members in steel buildings and bridges. It covers the fundamental behavior of stability bracing systems and recent advances in design provisions for structural elements.
The session reviews current bracing specifications from the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, emphasizing application through design examples. Attendees will explore methods to improve bracing system efficiency and examine recent developments in lateral torsional buckling solutions for flexural members.
The presentation also highlights AASHTO-adopted buckling solutions for non-prismatic members and addresses approaches for accounting for shear effects on lateral torsional buckling behavior.
Presenter
Todd Helwig, University of Texas at Austin
Todd Helwig holds the David Allen Cockrell Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught and conducted structural engineering research for 32 years. His work focuses on the design and behavior of steel structures, with expertise in stability, field monitoring and fatigue. A former chair of the Structural Stability Research Council, Helwig serves on technical committees for the American Institute of Steel Construction and AASHTO. He has taught short courses to thousands of engineers nationwide and received numerous national honors, including lifetime achievement and research awards from AISC, ASCE and SSRC.
