Description

Plan, build and document secure, automated workflows that connect multiple data sources, streamline operations and align with strict governance frameworks.

Outline

Building Connected Workflows brings discipline to the implementation process through a plan-first approach, motivated by practical, operational experience. Learners design planning documents that define requirements, success criteria and clear definitions of what "done" looks like before any workflow construction begins. Building on foundational concepts from the previous two courses, learners will design and construct complete automated workflows that connect multiple data sources, process and transform data, produce reports, route outputs to other platforms and trigger notifications. These practical methods ensure the resulting automated systems remain reliable, accessible, and highly functional for their team.

The course addresses security, access controls and data governance for tools in active professional use, offering strategic options for compliance-sensitive environments. Learners analyze how these automated systems integrate into broader departmental workflows, establishing clear protocols for task prioritization and governance. To ensure responsible use, the curriculum incorporates structured approaches to risk mitigation and operational compliance. The course culminates in an applied implementation project for which learners plan, build, launch and document a complete automated workflow tailored to their professional domain.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • create a specification document with AI assistance that defines requirements, system architecture, data flows, acceptance criteria and success criteria before building begins.
  • build a functional automated workflow that connects multiple data sources, processes data and produces deliverables consistent with a specification document.
  • conduct a security and compliance review of a completed workflow with AI assistance, identifying specific risks to data governance and access controls and recommending mitigations or areas requiring expert review.
  • document a completed project comprehensively enough that another person could understand, use and maintain the system.
  • present a completed workflow design to peers and stakeholders, articulating its operational value, functionality and performance limitations.

Course Format

This six-week course blends elements of asynchronous and synchronous components to provide learners with flexibility in project work, while also having face-to-face time with instructors and fellow learners via Zoom.
Each week, learners will:

  • attend one 90-minute Zoom, during which students will participate in discussions and workshop their project with the instructor and peers
  • complete three to four hours of assignments or project work

Learners will be graded based on completion of assessed assignments/projects.
