Taking Action Curriculum Development Institute

The African Studies Initiative is pleased to announce a paid opportunity for experienced teachers working with African content who are attending the summer institute Taking Action: Acting Locally Linking Globally June 18-21, 2018. During the week following the summer institute, from June 25-29, those educators accepted to the program will work alongside other K-16 teachers and pre service teachers to develop African related curriculum from the resources and presentations during the weeklong summer institute Taking Action: Acting Locally Linking Globally.

Taking Action: Acting Locally, Linking Globally Summer Institute Description

Date: Mon., June 18 - Thurs., June 21, 2018

Time: 9:00 am-4:00 pm

Place: 1210 Heller Hall, West Bank UMN

CEUs: 30

Cost: $100 (includes lunches, field trips, parking vouchers, resources)

Registration deadline: June 4, 2018 (or until full)

Are you a K-16 educator Interested in incorporating action into your course of study? Thinking about how to build empathy and understanding for local action in a global context? Wanting to relate civic engagement to global competencies? Wondering where to start? Join educators steeped in these areas for an immersive experience in preparing students to become active in their communities and world. Daily international lunches, field trips, related readings, and experiential activities included. Institute leads are Maddy Wegner of youthrive and Julie Bascom of Edina Schools. (There are a limited number of $750 stipends available for those educators attending this institute and interested in adapting their African related curriculum to include community action the following week, June 25-29. Taking Action Curriculum Development)

Position Requirements for curriculum development team

  • Must be a currently licensed teacher
  • Must be eligible for employment
  • Must develop curriculum with lesson plans containing African content and to taking action
  • Must be available from 9;00-4:00 from June 18-21(during taking action institute) and June 25-29,2018 (during curriculum development institute).
