Gender matters. Gender matters in our curriculum and classrooms, yet too often gendered experiences are left unacknowledged, unexplored, and untaught. How can educators bring such absented narratives into their classrooms to provide more-balanced perspectives, especially around issues of mass violence and human rights, and help students draw connections between content and their lived experiences?

In this weeklong seminar for K-16 educators, we will examine various topics related to gender and genocide, such as the experiences of women and girls and LGBTQ2 communities in the context of mass violence, rape and sexual violence, and legal and humanitarian responses to such human rights abuses. The seminar will feature interactive presentations from expert guest lecturers, as well as discussions about ways to transform the latest academic research into engaging lesson activities and unit plans for students. The workshop will invite reflection on the challenges of presenting painful and sensitive issues and materials in classroom-appropriate ways. Participants will work together with fellow educators and guest experts, utilizing the resources of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) and Human Rights Program (HRP), to create and modify unit and lesson plans to bring the content of the workshop to their classrooms. Educators will have the opportunity to earn $100 for creating lesson materials to be made available on the CHGS website.
