Introduction to Instructional Design for eLearning
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • define instructional design.
  • reflect on the qualities that create effective eLearning design.
  • use technologies that will assist your personal learning goals for the rest of the course.

How Learning Works
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • describe the process of learning, with particular attention to the definitions and features of “novice thinking” versus “expert thinking,” including organization of information and metacognitive habits.
  • explain Bloom's taxonomy and define the learning activities at each level.
  • explain the debate on “learning preferences” versus “learning styles” and defend your own position.
  • explain universal design and its utility in creating effective eLearning.

Distance Learning and Adults
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • list the characteristics of adult learners in both Western and non-Western contexts, and discuss the ways in which eLearning designs can support them.
  • describe and discuss the distance-learning context, its affordances, opportunities, and drawbacks.
  • create a metadata schema to help you tag items and store them for future retrieval.

Content Wrangling and Information Design
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • define plain language and the basics of Web writing, and how to transform jargon into plain language.
  • apply skills in content wrangling and information in service of creating effective eLearning content.
  • identify how to work effectively with a SME, including conducting an effective consultation.

Multimedia Learning Theory
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • describe basics of cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML) and how its principles impact your content designs.
  • describe the differences among Creative Commons, copyright, fair use, and permission to use.
  • create effective slides for audio-synched online presentation of information.
  • analyze best practices for using multimedia in eLearning design.

User Experience in Digital Environments
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • identify key characteristics of a user-friendly learning environment.
  • describe the separate functions of HTML, CSS and Javascript in modern Web pages.
  • define user experience (UX) and describe the ways in which knowledge and practice of UX principles can be useful in your work as an instructional designer.
  • name, describe and execute the six core skills of digital accessibility.

Motivation and Storytelling
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • explain the ARCS (attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction) theory of motivation and its relationship to learning.
  • use the ABT (and, but, therefore) template to transform otherwise dry material into an engaging lesson.
  • revise an eLearning module to incorporate aspects of storytelling.

Assessment and Evaluation
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • write effective learning objectives.
  • write an effective quiz question.
  • Describe basic survey design
  • explain the difference between evaluation and assessment.

Organization and Project Management
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • recognize tasks and roles that an instructional designer might play in the larger context of a learning project.
  • reflect on your project management and facilitation skills using self assessment as part of your reflection.
  • describe the relationship between personal organization and public organization for PM.

Leadership and Emotional Intelligence
By the end of this week, you’ll be able to:

  • define emotional intelligence (EQ).
  • identify strategies to develop and practice your EQ skills.
  • situate instructional design as a leadership role on a production team by using instructional design techniques to influence and improve projects.
