Description

Are you a U.S. veteran who is interested in beekeeping? Please join us for a series of 6 classes covering everything from bee biology and hive inspection techniques, to disease monitoring and management. At the end of the series you will have learned to:

  • enter a colony safely, minimizing disruption to the bees and stings to the beekeeper
  • check for the queen and evaluate her health and quality
  • quantify food resources such as nectar, pollen, and honey in the hive
  • support honey bees, bumblebees, and native bees with pollinator habitat
  • prepare the hives to successfully survive the winter
  • harvest and extract honey

No prior beekeeping experience is required. Protective equipment and tools will be provided for participants. Veterans may bring one friend or family member to join them at the class.

These hands-on classes are held primarily in our Bee Veterans Apiary located at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The August class will have a special focus on pollinator habitat and will be held at the Noerenberg Memorial Gardens in Orono, MN. At the October class we will harvest honey at the University of MN Bee Lab in St. Paul, MN.

Please note that beekeeping involves using smoke, and a risk of getting stung! Our Veterans Apiary is in close proximity to planes taking off and landing. If you are interested in attending a class but are concerned about any of these items, please contact the Bee Squad before signing up.

Participants will attend one class per month for 6 months:

  • Sunday, May 5- 4:00-5:00pm
  • Sunday, June 2- 4:00-5:00pm
  • Sunday, July 7- 4:00-5:00pm
