Description

This course is designed to train members of the lay public to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Successful completion of this course will make the student eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam.

BLS (Basic Life Support):

AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (not HeartSaver, not "CPR AED" unless it's followed by "for the professional rescuer") is required for this course. If you do not have BLS certification, you can order HeartCode BLS through the American Heart Association here: https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-bls. Once you have completed the didactic portion online, you can print out your certificate and we can complete the skill testing portion at class. You'll then receive your BLS certification. As of November 2021, the course is $31, payable to the AHA through their site.

In order to successfully complete the EMT course, all candidates must also complete the following online courses through the FEMA Emergency Management Institute. These courses are free and can be completed online. Ideally, candidates will complete this training prior to the first day of class, but it must be completed before the final exam. Completion certificates should be printed and brought to class on day 1.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the student will be able to sit for the cognitive exam for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and become certified to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Minnesota.

Key Benefits

EMTs may serve on ambulance services, rescue squads, fire departments and hospital emergency departments. EMTs may also serve in special event locations, such as amusement parks, sporting events and concerts.

Section Details

This is the spring EMT course. It is being conducted as a hybrid course, combining live lecture via Zoom and in-person skills labs. The zoom link will be sent out as part of the new student information prior to class.

NOTE: This course is not-for-credit.

Course Materials:

Course Material pick-up and skill labs will be held at the University of Minnesota Department of Emergency Management office, located at University Office Plaza, 2221 University Ave. SE, Suite 140, Minneapolis, MN 55414. It is located immediately to the southeast of TCF Bank Stadium.

Textbook:

This course uses Limmer's "Emergency Care" 14th Edition, with MyLab Brady for quizzes, etc. The textbook is included in the tuition. It is offered only as an eBook. If you wish a hard copy you have two choices: First, you can rent a copy through Chegg or other textbook rental services or second, once you receive your access code (about a week before class starts usually), you can log in and request a printed copy- it's loose-leaf, but relatively inexpensive. Or, you can just read the ebook. The textbook code will be sent out by the UMN bookstore unless you are otherwise notified.
