Description

This course is designed to train members of the lay public to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Successful completion of this course will make the student eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam.

AHA BLS Provider is offered during the course. Those students with current BLS Provider certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (for Healthcare professionals) are not required to re-take this extra classwork.

In order to successfully complete the EMT course, all candidates must also complete the following online courses through the FEMA Emergency Management Institute. These courses are free and can be completed online. Ideally, candidates will complete this training prior to the first day of class, but it must be completed before the final exam. Completion certificates should be printed and brought to class on day 1.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the student will be able to sit for the cognitive exam for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and become certified to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Minnesota.

Key Benefits

EMTs may serve on ambulance services, rescue squads, fire departments and hospital emergency departments. EMTs may also serve in special event locations, such as amusement parks, sporting events and concerts.

Section Details

This is the Summer EMT course. It is being conducted as a hybrid program, combining live lecture via Zoom and in-person skills labs. The zoom link will be sent out as part of the new student information prior to class.

This course will be conducted with in-person skill labs on alternating Wednesdays. The skill session schedule will be finalized and added before the final drop deadline.

Course Material pick-up and skill labs will be held at the University of Minnesota Department of Emergency Management office, located at University Office Plaza, 2221 University Ave. SE, Suite 140, Minneapolis, MN 55414. It is located immediately to the east of TCF Bank Stadium. Dates for material pick up and skills labs will be posted prior to the drop deadline. Note: Skills sessions will normally follow the normal class days & times.

BLS: AHA Basic Life Support will be offered as part of this course. If you provide current AHA or ARC BLS certification (for healthcare providers), you will not be required to complete that extra portion of class.
