Description

Through a combination of site visits, shared research from experts, and facilitated discussions, 6th grade teachers will delve into the history of the 1862 war and its legacy in the state more than a century and a half later. Participants will learn from Native scholars about the impacts of the war and the subsequent removal of Dakota communities, as well as the challenges faced by historical societies attempting to present history to the public. Finally, teachers will be introduced to new curriculum developed by the Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota that utilizes newspapers accounts of the war and its later commemorations. These resources are designed to enhance the understanding of the war and its critical role in shaping Minnesota history.
