Effective assessments for the secondary dual language and immersion (DLI) classroom need to monitor not only content understanding but also the development of target language proficiency – a challenging task indeed! This interactive three-hour workshop, intended specifically for secondary DLI teachers, will explore how to design and implement assessments that efficiently integrate content and language. After a brief introduction to several frameworks for conceptualizing and assessing language proficiency and the what and why behind performance assessments in DLI, we will together analyze sample assessments and rubrics/scoring guides to understand how they combine content and language evaluation. Participants will also have time to (re)design an assessment and associated rubric for their own classroom. Teams of secondary DLI teachers are encouraged to register together!

After this workshop you will be able to:

  • explain the value of performance assessments for secondary immersion;
  • describe a few frameworks for conceptualizing language proficiency; and
  • create assessments and basic rubrics that integrate content and language.

Presenter:

Her research focuses on supporting secondary immersion teachers in developing classroom materials that integrate content and language.
