This course prepares physicians and other health care providers to practice medicine with marginalized communities, and with communities affected by environmental exposure and climate change, including during disaster response and in settings with limited resources.

Estimated Time To Complete

Allow 40 hours, including additional time for bonus materials.

Objectives

This course enables you to:

  • Reflect on a clinician’s role in engaging with marginalized communities including historical inequities in global health and cross-cultural care, risks for harm, conflicts of interest, and unique needs and strengths for given communities.
  • Examine key marginalized populations’ unique health issues, determinants of health, available health systems, and prevention efforts. 
  • Appraise clinical research methods and ethics for engaging with marginalized communities.
  • Examine the effects on patient care of common  environmental exposures and climate change on the health of marginalized communities in low resource settings.
  • Explore barriers and opportunities for providing health care to marginalized communities during disaster and outbreak responses and in resource-limited settings. 

This course is composed of five sections:

  1. A Clinician's Role in Engaging with Marginalized Communities
  2. Key Populations' Unique Health Issues
  3. Research with Marginalized Communities as a Clinician
  4. Environmental Exposures and Climate Change Impacts on Marginalized Communities' Health
  5. Practical Approaches to Improving the Health of Marginalized Communities During Disasters and Outbreak Situations
