Infectious DiseaseThe Global Medicine Tropical and Travel Medicine for the Infectious Disease Specialist course is comprised of 37 hours of lecture-based content from the renowned University of Minnesota Online Global Health Course. Its primary aim is to prepare infectious disease physicians and other health care providers to address global health, tropical and infectious diseases that affect immigrants, refugees and other mobile populations. The course also addresses travel-related immunizations, health risks, and prevention strategies. 

Course modules include:

  • Travel medicine
  • Parasites, including malaria, filaria, and nematodes
  • Bacteria, including tuberculosis, Bartonella, and Brucella
  • Hemorrhagic fever and other viruses
  • Fungi diagnosis and treatment options

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize infectious diseases that affect mobile populations such as refugees, immigrants, and travelers.
  • Identify health risks and prevention strategies for international travelers and define vaccine indications for travel-related immunizations. 
  • Identify methods for diagnosing infectious diseases in international travelers.
  • Recognize global migration factors, such as access to care and cultural differences, that impact the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in a global setting.
