PUBH X809 - Occupational Exposure Limits
Description
This lecture, by Dr. Susan Arnold, provides a thorough overview of Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs). This course includes:
- A historical overview of OELs,
- OELs today, and
- The process of developing and updating OELs.
Outline
The online lecture starts with a historical background of the development of Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs). Then it moves onto the state of OELs today, including discussing the different limits developed by different organizations.
The lecture then moves on to discuss Threshold Limit Values (TLV), including:
- TWA (Time Weighted Average) TLVs
- STEL (Short-Term Exposure Limit) TLVs
- TLV Notations (SKIN, SEN, CANCER and BEI)
The lecture also describes different OEL methodologies and the advantages and limitations of each method.
Objectives
Upon completion of the module, the learner with be able to:
- Understand the historical background in the development of occupational exposure limits (OELs)
- Recognize the challenges of setting exposure limits, including obtaining research data and dealing with industrial resistance.
- Be able to describe what is a Threshold Limit Value (TLV) and how they differ from other OELs by other organizations
- Know the four TVL Notations (SKIN, SEN, CANCER and BEI) and what each denotes.
- Be able to describe what is indicated by a TWA (Time Weighted Average) TLV, a STEL (Short-Term Exposure Limit) TLV, and TLV-c (Ceiling)
- Be able to describe OEL methodologies and their limitations:
- Analogy
- Correlation
- Low Dose Extrapolation
- Safety/Uncertainty Factors
