Description

Sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) is an entry-level program organized to educate graduate students who are interested in learning about the role of science/social science in policy-making and the federal policy-making process to empower students with ways to become a voice for basic research throughout their careers. Four University of Minnesota graduate students, across disciplines, were selected from a highly competitive pool to participate in CASE workshops held March 29-April 1, 2020, and in Washington, DC.  Participants were selected based on their ability to effectively communicate their interest in and benefit of participating in the workshops; evidence of leadership opportunities within and outside the University of Minnesota, and experience presenting at conferences and academic events.

CASE workshops focused on the following:
  • structure and organization of Congress
  • the federal budget and appropriations processes
  • tools for effective science communication and civic engagement
  • interactive seminars about policy-making and communication
  • meetings with their elected Members of Congress and congressional staff
Upon completion of the program, participants highlighted their experiences through a video to inform their peers about the rewards and challenges of participating in the workshops.
