Description

"No one becomes 'not racist,' despite a tendency by Americans to identify themselves that way. We can only strive to be 'antiracist' on a daily basis, to continually rededicate ourselves to the lifelong task of overcoming our country’s racist heritage." Ibram Kendi.

Join us for a four book discussion on what it means to be white and antiracist in the United States. This facilitated conversation will cover the systematic structures of racism and what we can do individually and in community to dismantle racism in Minnesota. The reading list includes:

  • A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota (Sun Yung Shin, 2016)
  • White Fragility (Robin DiAngelo, 2018)
  • How to be an Anti-Racist (Ibram X. Kendi, 2019)
  • Me and White Supremacy (Layla Saad, 2020).

The anti-racism book group will meet on the 4th Wednesday each month for four months starting July 29. The group will meet over Zoom. When reserving your spot, indicate a preference for the 8:30-9:45 or the 11:30-12:45 group. Each group will have an estimated maximum of 8 participants.

Due to availability of books, the book list or and reading dates are subject to change.

Joining you in this journey as co-learners and facilitators are University of Minnesota Leadership and Civic Engagement educators Lori Rothstein and Nancy O’Brien.

Note: Registration does not include the books. There are two sections of this offering, 8:30 am and 11:30 am.
