On-line Thursday Evenings in July and August

  • July 23, 2020 5:30 – 7:30 PM Mesic Hardwood Forest System
  • August 6, 2020 5:30 – 7:30 PM Fire Dependent Forest/Woodland System
  • August 20, 2020 5:30 – 7:30 PM Wet Forest System

This three part tree and plant identification class will introduce you to 3 native plant community types; the plant indicators, the landform, soil and field characteristics for each of these plant communities. The three plant community types we will explore are the Mesic Hardwood Forest System, the Fire Dependent Forest/Woodland System and the Wet Forest System.

Tree and plant identification is approached one plant at a time, however an understanding of the context of where and why certain plants are found in an area leads to increased proficiency at identification. Therefore, plant id is dependent on the context and knowing a wide range of individual plants. The instructors believe this systemic approach will help you become proficient at plant identification in your backyard and beyond.

This course will provide you access to readings and background information for use during our discussions through University of Minnesota Canvas on-line platform. Thursday evening lecture and discussion sessions will be held using Zoom.
