Description

Course Description:

An online course for learners who are interested in investigating the biomechanical and epidemiological aspects of the shoulder in athletics. The course will explore the unique demands placed on the shoulder in sports that involve throwing, swimming, swinging, and bodily impacts. The course begins with an investigation into sport-specific biomechanics, pathomechanics, and epidemiology and progresses to applied problem solving for rehabilitation and research scenarios.

Outline

Course Sequencing and Continuing Education Information

The course can be taken in its entirety or specific classes can be taken. Classes one and two are required prior to engaging with other classes because they provide foundational information the rest of the classes draw upon. Upon completion of each class sequence and after scoring at least 50% on the self assessments you will receive a certificate of completion with documentation of hours for continuing education purposes.  It is the responsibility of the learner to ensure that the classes will count toward their professional obligations. However, for physical therapists these continuing education hours are approved in the state of Minnesota.

Objectives

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the unique demands placed on athletes’ shoulders through an increased understanding of shoulder kinematic and kinetic principles.

  2. Analyze how sport-specific movement patterns relate to performance and epidemiology of injury.

  3. Predict likely areas of potential shoulder tissue injuries based on the mechanical stress generated by specific sports.

  4. Select appropriate motion analysis tools for analyzing shoulder movement in key sports, and differentiate the strengths and limitations of each tool.

  5. Determine key rehabilitation principles for an athlete’s shoulder.

  6. Critically appraise return to sport criteria through a deeper understanding of the unique biomechanical demands and epidemiological considerations of the shoulder in sport.

Key Benefits

Learner Development Outcomes

  • Following completion of the course, the learner will demonstrate the ability to integrate new understanding of the shoulder in sports with their backgrounds in kinesiology, sports medicine or clinical care.
