Global Health, while a relatively new field, carries a long legacy that continues to shape the field. The COVID pandemic and the George Floyd murder have triggered conversations about the future of Global Health. Foremost among these conversations are issues around decolonization and equity. This course will look at the current state of global health and the ethical frameworks that need to be considered in global health engagements.

The course will open with a review of the history of Global Health. Various ethical frameworks including Development Ethics, Public Health Ethics etc., will be reviewed. Students will also engage in discussions on ethical issues in pandemics, disasters and global aid. . Lastly the class will engage in application of ethical frameworks using case scenarios pertinent to global health. The course will also feature guest speakers with personal experience in global health The course will feature a mixture of in-class lectures, readings, discussions, case studies, and presentations.

This non-credit course meets with the academic course PubH 7200-105 as part of the 2025 Public Health Institute.

Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and analyze the history of Global Health and the current structures that influence them.
  2. Describe the main paradigms of ethics as it applies to global health practice.
  3. Explain key issues in global health ethics including the practical application of ethical framework to global health research, clinical care, and other engagements.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of critical ethical concerns in global health emergencies, pandemics, and disasters.
  5. Discuss key components of applied ethics in global health practice, including decision making frameworks and ethics of community engagement.

Registration & Cancellation

The registration fee for this course is $595. You will receive an email letter outlining program logistics two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Requests for refunds will be honored in full if a written cancellation request is received prior to the course start date. An administration fee of $50 will be charged to all refund requests received after the first day of class. The University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH) reserves the right to cancel any course. In the event of a course cancellation, registrants will receive a full refund of the program registration fee. SPH is not responsible for refund of travel or other costs incurred by registrants.

SPH will provide a certificate of attendance verifying 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) offered for this program. This course is eligible for 15 CPH recertification credits.

All courses are approved for CPH Recertification Credits by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
