OED X108 - ECHO Dialogues Across Difference: Race & Racism
Description
The story of the United States is shaped by conflicting truths- aspirations of liberty and equality alongside a history and present reality built on racism and exclusion. This course invites learners to engage those truths openly and honestly, exploring how racialized oppression continues to influence institutions, cultures, and everyday interactions. This ECHO emphasizes the courage and humility required to hold tension, listen deeply, and participate in honest dialogue about race and power. Learners will examine how systems and habits of dominance perpetuate racial inequity and how individuals and communities can build bridges through reflection and healing, open conversations, interracial connection, and cooperative action. By the end of this course, learners will:
- Explore the historical and contemporary realities of racism in U.S. institutions and culture, and how dominant culture dynamics perpetuate racialized oppression in our learning and work spaces.
- Reflect on the conflicting truths within our national story and within ourselves.
- Practice dialogue and interracial bridging skills including deep listening, empathy, curiosity, and accountability when discussing racism and privilege.
- Identify actions for interrupting racism and fostering relationships grounded in mutual respect and shared responsibility.
