Description

For many, religion and spirituality shape meaning, values, and community. For others, secular or humanist perspectives offer similar grounding. Yet conversations about belief, faith, and worldview can feel uncomfortable or divisive in public and academic settings. This course invites learners to engage these complex dynamics with curiosity, empathy, and respect. Learners will explore how religious, spiritual, and humanist identities intersect with culture, history, and systems of power. Through dialogue and reflection, participants will practice the skills needed to navigate conflicting beliefs, examine bias and privilege related to religion and spirituality, and foster learning and work environments that are inclusive of diverse worldviews and beliefs.  By the end of this course, learners will:

  • Understand how religion, spirituality, and worldview shape personal and communal identities.
  • Examine how power and privilege operate within historical and contemporary contexts of religion.
  • Practice dialogue skills for discussing faith, meaning, and values in inclusive and constructive ways.
  • Contribute to learning and working environments that honor freedom of belief, conscience, and expression.
