Description

When a raptor is presented for rehabilitation, the first 24 hours are packed with questions that need to be answered. What type/extent of biosecurity must be practiced to prevent the spread of disease? What are the fine points of conducting a complete physical exam and what are some species-specific traits to pay close attention to? Once the exam is complete and medical problems diagnosed, does the bird have a reasonable chance of recovery and return to the wild (triage)? If the decision is made to move the bird forward, what type of stabilization/initial treatments are needed based on the birds’ presentation? This 4-week course will address many of the questions and decisions that must be made during that first critical 24 hours.
