Overview
While everyone has different preferences when it comes to transportation, at one time or another everyone travels as a pedestrian. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian is killed nearly every 1.5 hours in traffic crashes. But, many deadly crashes are preventable. With the application of the pedestrian safety countermeasures promoted as part of Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP), agencies are able to make significant reductions in crashes involving pedestrians.
So how does an agency take the first step? The FHWA has developed a process for agencies to use for selecting appropriate countermeasures to help improve pedestrian safety, which is covered in detail in this training.

Who Should Take This Course
This course is intended for local agency and tribal transportation safety specialists, planners, designers, engineers, supervisors, and project managers—particularly those that select and implement pedestrian crossing countermeasure installation.
