ACTIVITY PURPOSE/STATEMENT OF NEED
Given the current advances in the study of germline genetics of childhood cancer, a symposium is needed to gain a full understanding of what is known about the germline genetic risk factors for childhood cancers, what remains to be discovered, and how those working in this field might go about discovering future innovations.

INTENDED LEARNERS
Pediatric oncologists, oncology nurses, genetic counselors, and scientists studying pediatric cancer

ACTIVITY DESIGN
This activity is designed as a symposium with invited speakers. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Following completion of this activity, learners should be better able to:

  • Describe the state of knowledge about germline genetic risk for childhood cancer.
  • Recount the function of genes related to risk of childhood cancer.
  • Explain scenarios in which genetic testing is warranted in cases of childhood cancer.

KEY TOPICS

  • High-penetrance variants - what is known and what is left to be discovered?
  • Common variation - what is it telling us about the biology of carcinogenesis?
  • The role of de novo mutation in childhood cancer.
  • Is GxE interaction possible to examine in childhood cancer?
  • Functional genomics approaches for childhood cancer.
  • Moving germline genomics into practice through prediction, screening, and possibly prevention.

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
