The Global Pediatrics Education Series 2.0 ("GPEDS") is comprised of 29 modules of lecture-based content delivered by pediatric specialists. The purpose of this course is to provide you with the foundational knowledge you need to learn to be able to work abroad in under-resourced areas of the world. The content is also suitable and useful for those who wish to gain knowledge of global health to inform a US-based clinical practice in pediatrics.

Start by completing the pretest before diving into the content. The course is organized in 4 modules consisting of 29 blocks of lecture-based content delivered by experts from various pediatric specialties. Topics include:

  • Fundamentals of Global Child Health
  • Disease identification management
  • Clinical pearls and Pre-work Abroad
  • Global health at Home

The content in this short course was authored by experts in global pediatrics health from the University of Minnesota and vetted by unbiased, external experts. Technical handouts and self-paced assessments round out this unique, premiere learning activity.

The primary audience for this course includes physicians and other health care providers working in immigrant, refugee, and travelers' health and tropical medicine.

The Global Pediatrics Education Series strives to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Discuss the health and socioeconomic factors that influence neonatal, child, and maternal survival.
  • Utilize appropriate terminology regarding global health epidemiology and state the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to global child health preventable diseases.
  • Effectively manage and treat diarrhea and pneumonia, the leading causes of child mortality in low and middle income countries.
  • Apply clinical knowledge of commonly-encountered infectious diseases prevalent in low and middle income countries.
  • Recognize and treat common hematologic diseases, including acquired and hereditary anemias.
  • Recognize and treat undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies using best practices.
  • Describe role of global pediatrics domestically, including the preparation and care of internationally adopted children, refugee health, and travel medicine.
  • Take appropriate steps to prepare for and safely travel abroad.

Content is provided in 29 modules, estimated to 24 hours.

Participants must register and pay the associated fee to receive the personal login and access codes needed to access the module. To complete the module, participants will do the following: read the objectives and faculty disclosures, proceed through the educational material, successfully complete the pre-and-post-tests, and complete the module evaluation. After completing the evaluation, participants will be able to print a statement of participation.

In support of improving patient care, University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

American Medical Association (AMA) Credit Designation Statement
The University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education designates this enduring material for a maximum of 24.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Other Health Care Professionals
Nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals who participate in this CME activity may submit their Statement of Participation to their appropriate accrediting organizations or state boards for consideration of credit. The participant is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education.
