This conference is designed to address topics related to human brain tumors. The activity will focus on topics related to the detection and screening of patients who are genetically prone to childhood or adult brain tumor development, using genomics to determine the molecular profile and prognosis for patients diagnosed with a brain tumor, conventional therapy for brain tumors, living with a brain tumor, and new approaches for brain tumor therapy including blood brain barrier disruption, immunotherapy, and targeted drug therapy.

This activity is designed for physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals who care for patients with brain tumors.

Following completion of this activity, learners should be better able to:

  • Identify patients and family members that may have single gene defects that could cause brain tumors and recommend genetic testing.
  • Explain genetic or immunohistochemical tests on medulloblastoma or glioma cases that could be done in a clinical lab to improve accurate patient prognostication.
  • Describe promising methods that could be used to breach barriers to drug delivery for brain and other nervous system tumors.
  • Identify ongoing clinical trials, including immune therapies, for brain and other nervous system tumors to which their patients might be referred.
  • Evaluate promising immune based therapies being used in human cancer that are being tested and that may be useful in brain tumors and how they are purported to work.
  • Explain special barriers to brain tumor immunotherapy that must be breached.
  • Explain concerns of brain tumor patients by interacting with affected individuals and their caretakers who will attend this meeting.

The preliminary agenda (PDF) is available. The final agenda will be available approximately one week prior to the course.
