Description

Best Practices in Medical Education Day provides a day long bi-campus forum for medical educators at the University of Minnesota. Plenaries at both the start and end of the day, workshops, and a poster session all aim to foster connectivity and share new and innovative ideas to improve practice. The focus on medical education practice and research is designed to give participants best evidence in medical education to improve teaching and learning in the medical school. This year's themes are communication and scholarship of teaching and learning. Best Practices Day is free and open to all faculty, fellows, residents, staff and students.

Objectives

Following this activity, participants will be better able to

  • Implement specific evidence based medical education teaching and learning practices
  • Discuss new projects and areas of medical education research that are being explored on both campuses and with affiliates.
  • Implement new techniques in their own teaching practices.
  • Participate in new medical education and research networks.

Keynotes

Clinical Reasoning at the Bedside: From Practice to Scholarship    
Georges Bordage, MD, PhD

Professor, Department of Medical Education
College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago

Dr. Bordage teaches courses in Scholarship and Current Issues in Health Professions Education, Research Design and Grant Writing, and Scientific Writing. His research includes the study of clinical reasoning; written and oral assessment of clinical decisions (the “key features” approach); and scientific writing.

Setting Standards for Mastery Learning Assessments    
Rachel Yudkowsky, MD, MHPE

Associate Professor, Department of Medical Education
College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago

Dr. Yudkowsky serves as Director of the Dr. Allen L and Mary L Graham Clinical Performance Center where she develops standardized patient and simulation-based programs for the instruction and assessment of students, residents and staff; Director of the University of Illinois Health Sciences Simulation Consortium; and co-President of the Chicago Simulation Consortium.
