Description

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and biological control (biocontrol) in the greenhouse are important to understand to conserve beneficial insects and reduce pesticide use. Biocontrol cannot be used effectively in greenhouses without a comprehensive understanding of IPM, which involves a diversity of control strategies, often for multiple pests, and an understanding of the effects of insecticides on pests and biocontrol agents.

Outline

1. Introduction to greenhouse management, Vera Krischik UMN
2. EPA registered insecticides and compatibility with biocontrols, Julie Graesch, Bioworks
3. Installing bumblebees and implementing pollinator friendly management, Vera Krischik UMN
4. Steps in implementing an IPM program, preventative and rescue treatments, Rachel Sporer, Biobest
5. Biofungicides for root disease, Carter Kent, Bioworks
6. Scouting and recognizing plant disease symptoms to optimize the timing of biopesticide applications, Carter Kent, Bioworks

Objectives

Learn how to identify pest insects, beneficial insects that exert biocontrol to control pests, and biorational insecticides that conserve beneficial insects.

Key Benefits

Reduce pesticide use, decrease risk of pesticide exposure to workers, production of plants free of harmful pesticides, and economic benefits from reduced pesticide use.

Competencies

You will receive an IGH IPM BC certificate that can be used for CEU credit and educational credit. Also, training from the course can be used to find a job or create advancement at your current job.
