Description

The 2023 NORA Online Symposium, "Changing the Climate of Worker Health and Safety: A Forum on Lessons and Actions to Foster a Resilient Workforce" featured presentations and an interactive discussion with a panel of experts on the effects of climate change on worker health and safety in a variety of industries and workplaces. In this course, learners have the opportunity to watch the panelists’ presentations and the post Q&A. The panelists and their presentation topics include:

• Marysel Pagán Santana, DrPH, MS, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, Senior Program Manager for Puerto Rico Migrant Clinicians Network: Protecting Workers from Climate-Related Exposures in Puerto Rico
• Matt Holmstrom, Risk Management Officer, Pacific Northwest Region of the US Forest Service: Wildfires: A Massively Growing Threat and Its Impact on Workers in the Field and Our Communities at Large
• Robert Servian, Safety Consultant Principal, Workplace Safety Consultation Minnesota,  Department of Labor and Industry: The Role of the MN Department of Labor and Industry and a Brief Overview of the Impact of Climate Change on Minnesota Workers

This course is intended for public health professionals and students interested in worker safety and climate change, but is open to anyone interested in this topic. The panel session was moderated by Dr. Jeff Bender, UMASH Director.

The symposium was co-sponsored by the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety (MCOHS) and the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH). The centers are housed within the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Division of Environmental Health Sciences.

Objectives

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

• Identify four ways climate change and disasters impact agricultural workers and their communities.
• Describe three best practices discussed to address climate change related exposures and disasters that impact farm workers in Puerto Rico.
• Identify three ways the increase in wildfires have harmed communities and populations over the past forty years across the United States.
• Discuss the impact of wildfires on firefighters’ worker-related health and safety.
• Explain the role of the MN Dept of Labor and Industry plays in protecting and supporting worker’s rights in the state of MN.
• Name three of the main climate change related threats impacting MN worker safety.
