ABOUT THE FAMILY MEDICINE SPECIALTY MODULE
This 40-hour course provides a selection of lectures from the Online Minnesota Global Health course which was created in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For the full 250-hour course, follow this link: www.globalhealth.umn.edu/education/online-global-health-course. The Online Global Health course curriculum contains presentations extracted from previous offerings of the Live Global Health course and Grand Rounds sessions held at the University of Minnesota. The selected lectures will give you an overview of the knowledge and skills you will likely need to do international work in resource-limited regions of the world. Topics in this course review:

• Infectious diseases in adults and children including HIV, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, tuberculosis, dengue, cholera, among others
• Trauma assessment, disaster management, pre-op and post-op surgical skills, OB/gyn emergencies
• Chronic disease management such as hypertension, diabetes, hypertension, and other endocrine disorders
• Special topics in dermatology, nephrology, neurology, oncology and rehabilitation
• Water and nutritional issues such as protein energy deficiency, oral rehydration, micronutrient deficiency
• Cross cultural communication

TARGET AUDIENCE
The primary audience for this course includes physicians and other health care providers working in immigrant, refugee, and travelers' health and tropical medicine.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The Family Medicine Specialty Module strives to accomplish the following objectives:

• Diagnose and treat the infectious diseases likely to be encountered in tropical regions and in immigrants to the U.S.
• Explain a framework for providing culturally-competent health care during disaster response, trauma management, pre- and post-operative issues and obstetrical emergencies in resource-limited settings.
• Explain a framework for addressing chronic diseases in resource-limited settings.
• Explain the clinical presentation, and the diagnosis and treatment approach to dermatology, oncology, neurology, nephrology, and rehab medicine in the developing world.
• State approaches to ensuring safe water and diagnosing and managing rehydration and nutritional deficiencies in resource-limited settings.
• Discuss the key components to communication across cultures in the developing world and with immigrants in the US.

ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE
The estimated time to complete the entire module is 40 hours.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION
Participants must register and pay the associated fee to receive the personal login and access codes needed to access the module. To complete the module, participants will do the following: read the objectives and faculty disclosures, proceed through the educational material, successfully complete the post-tests, and complete the module evaluation. After completing the evaluation, participants will be able to print a statement of participation.

In support of improving patient care, University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
