This course provides an overview of foundational concepts, frameworks, and organizational structures in public health. Each lesson includes objectives meant to increase your knowledge, skills or abilities in your work as a public health professional.

The content was developed by the University of Minnesota for training Public Health Corps members, and has been provided here without adaptation

Objectives

At the end of the following lessons, the learner will be able to:

  1. What is Public Health?
    1. Define Public Health
    2. Name and provide examples of determinants of health
    3. Explain and recognize examples for the 3 types of prevention
  2. Public Health Approach to Prevention
    1. Describe the Public Health Approach to Prevention
    2. Use common terms when describing the magnitude of health issues in a population
  3. Public Health System
    1. Recognize the 3 core functions of public health, the 10 Essential Public Health Services, and the Foundational Public Health Responsibilities. 
    2. Correlate the structure and organization of public health at the local, state, tribal, and federal level.
    3. Articulate the structure of public health in Minnesota.
  4. Health Equity
    1. Use relevant health equity-related terms appropriately.
    2. Make the connection between historic inequities and current health inequities.
    3. Articulate how Minnesota’s Statewide Health Improvement framework addresses health equity in its strategic approach.
  5. Data Collection
    1. Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative data.
    2. Describe the difference between primary and secondary data.
    3. Appreciate how one’s positionality impacts the data collection process.
    4. Reframe data activities using a Health Equity Data Analysis (HEDA) approach.
  6. Assessing Community Health
    1. Identify the four phases of the assessment and planning process, as articulated by the Minnesota Department of Health.
    2. Describe similarities and differences between a community health assessment (CHA) and a community health improvement plan (CHIP).
    3. Identify appropriate sources of data and information to assess the health of a community.
  7. Steps in the Interview Data Collection & Analysis Process
    1. Describe components within the general steps of the interview data collection and analysis process
    2. Appreciate the importance of thoughtful planning in the interview data collection and analysis process
  8. Coding
    1. Use the coding process in qualitative data collection and analysis
    2. Appreciate how one’s positionality impacts the data collection and analysis process

Competencies

For CPH recertification, the following competencies may be met:

Continuing Education Units

Learners are eligible to receive up to 1.0 Continuing Education Units, or 10 (60 minute) contact hours, or 10 CPH Recertification credits.
