A how-to workshop for those curious about or active on nonprofit boards.

This workshop offers a real world view of the role and activities of board members of nonprofit organizations. Whether you’re exploring the idea of serving on a board, involved on the board of a student organization, or an experienced board member, this workshop will help you be ready to be an informed and valuable board member. You’ll learn about types of boards, the roles and responsibilities of board members, how to join a board, and hear from Humphrey School alumni about their experiences on nonprofit boards.

Overview of nonprofit boards. 5:00 – 6:00 

  • Types of nonprofit boards
  • Board roles and responsibilities
  • Board activities and operations – what do board members do in their role?


Experiences of board members. 6:00 – 7:00 

  • Panel of three Humphrey School alumni discussing their experiences as nonprofit board members.

 

How to be a valuable board member. 7:00 – 8:00

  • Board members – who serves on boards, how are board members recruited and selected
  • How to join a board – finding opportunities and getting involved
  • Active participation on boards

Objectives

After completing this workshop, the learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards
  • Describe the different types of board and their function
  • Develop a personal plan for potential on ongoing nonprofit board serve
