Description

Target Audience: This institute is designed for dual language and immersion teachers, coaches, program coordinators, and administrators at the secondary (middle school and high school) level. However, it can be applied to teachers in other content-based language education settings, such as elementary dual language or ESL contexts.

Description: In order to support students toward high levels of bilingualism and biliteracy, secondary dual language teachers need to explicitly teach language features within their content-focused classes. In this interactive and practical workshop, participants will experience a variety of instructional strategies that can be used in any discipline - and with any language - to teach language while also engaging with content concepts. Participants will leave this workshop with a number of new tools for their instruction as well as clear first steps for implementing those strategies in their classrooms.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of explicit language instruction in content-focused secondary dual language classes;
  • Describe common underlying characteristics of language-focused instructional strategies for content-based classrooms; and
  • Incorporate explicit language instruction into their units and lessons
