Description

This self-paced orientation includes a series of videos and written resources designed to help physicians, lab technicians, and other medical professionals learn about human temporal bone processing.

Outline

The orientation consists of seven sequential modules, followed by a final quiz. You must complete each module before moving on to the next one.

Upon completing all modules and achieving a score of 80% or higher on the final quiz, you will be eligible to apply for a week of hands-on training in human temporal bone processing at our laboratory (if desired). To apply, please fill out the survey with your contact information after the final quiz.

Objectives

The goal of this course is to provide physicians, lab technicians, and other medical professionals a comprehensive introduction to the processing of human temporal bones - a specialized, lengthy, and at times challenging - though ultimately rewarding - task. This is the first formal course of its kind dedicated to training technicians in the art of Otopathology.

Founded in 1967 by Dr. Michael Paparella, the University of Minnesota's Paparella Otopathology & Ear Pathogenesis Laboratory has over five decades of experience in the processing of (human) temporal bones; since our founding we have processed over 2,000 specimens to date. Our hope is that this online course will demystify the process, train technicians, aggregate best practices, and encourage more people to enter the field of Otopathology.
