The University of Minnesota’s Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility (CGHSR) in partnership with the organization EqualHealth is pleased to offer Global Health in Local Contexts: A Transnational Experiential Course on the Social Determinants, Health Equity, and Leading Change. This course will immerse students in the study of health equity, the social determinants of health, global health in a local setting, and community-based healthcare.
This year’s course will offer a unique opportunity for students to co-learn with peers in Uganda and Haiti who will be engaged in parallel, geographically-based sub-courses. Global, collaborative participation will promote understanding of the ways in which globally-connected social forces impact experience in local settings in similar and different ways.
This course uses an inter-professional and experiential model. The course is "classroom-less" and entirely held in community settings, such as a rural Hmong Farm, the Center for Social Healing, Bdote/Fort Snelling State Park, and theatrical performance spaces throughout the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area.
Course topics will be examined through the lens of social medicine. Social medicine, a discipline with a rich and storied history of efforts to address the social determinants of health, has been identified by some as a particularly salient approach to engage the current collection of problems encompassed by global health. The practice of social medicine integrates the voice and vote of patients, families and communities, is multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral in its approach, ensures an equity agenda, and is guided by the local context to inform global policy.
Thank you for your interest in Global Health in Local Contexts. To apply for the fall 2022 session of this course, participants are first required to submit an application outside this system. Learn more about the course and application process on our website.
