The workshop is designed specifically for P-16 educators; students in teacher training programs; those involved with the education of American Indian students including classroom teachers, teacher aides, curriculum specialists, library media specialists, guidance counselors, home-school coordinators, Title IX/JOM coordinators and administrators; tribal education staff; college and university faculty, staff and administrators; educators in museum and non-profits organizations. and those with an interest in American Indian Studies and/or American Indian education.

Objectives

  1. Identify and demonstrate understanding of tribal groups and reservations in Minnesota
  2. Explain the unique relationship between tribal nations and the United States government
  3. Describe how sovereignty and treaties are essential for tribes in their exercise of self-government
  4. Identify cultural and linguistic diversity of tribal groups in Minnesota
  5. Explain the historical context and policies resulting in the current conditions of Native peoples
  6. Discuss challenges and methods pertaining to educational issues in Indian country
  7. Develop critical thinking skills to assess narratives and textbook portrayals of American Indians.
