Description

The value of comprehending the humanity, history, and lives of others from different contexts is increasingly significant in our globalized world. In an ongoing effort to foster a representative understanding of these areas in Africa, the Children's Africana Book Award recognizes quality K-12 books published in the United States on Africa. Each winning title has been vetted by an awards jury which is composed of African Studies and Children’s Literature scholars.  During this institute, participants will read, discuss, and plan how to use some of these award winning books in their classroom, as well as delve into a greater understanding of how to read the world through literature.

There is an optional program running alongside Stories of Conflict and Hope African Literature in the High School Classroom which will offer two licensed teachers who attend the institute an opportunity to work with four preservice teachers to develop curriculum based on institute books.  Participants of this special curriculum development session, July 17-27,  will earn $1000 stipend.

All participants of the institute will receive a free copy of the book and other resources.

Registration will cover a copy of all the books, resources, lunch and parking.
