Description

In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Arabic conversation (including introductions and greetings) through interactive exercises. Participants will also learn some of the features of the Arabic alphabet and the language more broadly speaking, and will learn to pronounce Arabic names correctly. We will touch upon basic elements of Islam, and will address elements of popular culture in various regions of the Arab world, highlighting the diversity in the region. Content of the workshop can be tailored somewhat to meet participant's interests. 
 
Dr. Katrien Vanpee is the Director of the Arabic Language Program at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches Arabic poetry and various levels of Arabic. She holds a doctoral degree in Arabic Literature and Linguistics from Georgetown University, and graduate and undergraduate degrees in Arab Studies and Germanic Languages. Her research interests focus on Arabic poetry, Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, and studies of the Arabian Peninsula.
