Description

Evidence-based medicine skills are essential to providing patient care and managing population health. Participants in this course will develop a methodical approach to practicing evidence-based medicine. This course will improve participants’ abilities to ask a well-constructed question, acquire evidence efficiently, appraise evidence comprehensively, and apply it to answer questions. This course will also review study designs, biostatistical concepts, and common statistical tests used in the literature.

Outline

ABCs of Evidence-based medicine is organized into five modules. During this aplication-based online activity, materials will be released on a weekly basis. The five course modules consist of various instructional materials, including: presentations, self-evaluation questions, activities and discussions. Participants will be required to pass (70% or better) four quizzes released throughout the activity and a cumulative written assignment. Participants can log in and access the learning materials 24 hours/day-7 days/week, at their convenience. This activity totals 12 contact hours.

Objectives

After completing this course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Given a complex clinical scenario, outline a well-constructed question using PICO (population, intervention, comparison, outcome) format
  • Apply a rational and methodical search strategy to select resources that are based on convenience, relevance, and validity of the resources
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of different study designs 
  • Given a clinical scenario and question, determine the best study design to answer the question
  • Explain key terms and basic statistical concepts used in scientific literature
  • Interpret evidence using basic statistical concepts
  • Define types of data
  • Determine the statistical test to use for a given type of data and study design
  • Identify when common statistical tests have been applied and interpreted appropriately or inappropriately
  • Develop a methodical approach for appraising evidence that involves evaluating the relevance and validity of the evidence and the magnitude and significance of its findings
  • Evaluate evidence to answer questions related to patient care and population health
