Description

Graphic novels can grow students' ability to empathize with others in our interdependent world, and increase social awareness while offering examples of characters who have found their own voices and taken action in their time and place in the world. Through interactive exercises, participants will learn how to use graphic novels to engage students, build empathy, and create global literacy. Participants do not need to have read the graphic novels ahead of time. These activities can be used in many ways to increase empathy in the social studies or language arts classroom.  Novels referenced include Abina and the Important Men, The Authorized Comic Book of Nelson Mandela, and Aya Life in Yop City.
