In this two hour workshop, two area high school teachers will share lesson plans they developed for the award winning book Far From Home. Hannah Cushing from District 287 will explore African literature in non-traditional classrooms and special education, including how to encourage the development of social-emotional skills through reading and reflecting upon literature. Eric Beckman, world history teacher from Anoka Hennepin schools, will share lessons designed to use all or parts of Far From Home in a World History class to illustrate and to consider the dynamics of colonialism, decolonization and legacy of colonialism. This workshop is free of charge but book is NOT included. Participants will receive a parking voucher and will have read Far From Home prior to attending the workshop.
