Description

Motivational Interviewing (MI), a collaborative conversational style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change, has been shown to be effective in supporting the engagement and progress of individuals and families involved in child welfare services. This first self-paced online course will introduce learners to MI, including its history, spirit, principles, processes, and skills. This training is a prerequisite for the live “Motivational Interviewing (MI) Skills for Child Welfare Professionals: Virtual Workshops” course.

Prerequisite Requirements

All MI learners MUST have proof of completion for the following two prerequisites in order to register for any MI course (for all three pathways):

  • New Worker Foundations Training
  • ICWA/MIFPA 2-Day Training

Visit the Required Prerequisites page for a complete overview and listing of the specific courses that will satisfy this requirement.

Supervisors, lead workers, or designated specialists within agencies who are designated to provide supervision to MI trained workers must complete training before workers, at the same time as workers, or within six months of workers starting training.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

This course is approved for 4.0 CEUs. This course meets BOSW CEU criteria where one CEU equals one contact hour of training (1:1). Learners who are interested in earning BOSW CEUs can access their training record by logging in to learning.umn.edu. The number of professional development CEUs earned from this training may not translate the same based on your licensing governing board requirements and calculations. It is the responsibility of the participant to apply the training hours earned within your licensing governance board, using your training record.
